The Ecclesiastical History of Evagrius by Evagrius Scholasticus

Additional photos available upon request. An absolutely beautiful, heartibly-legible and easily-readable copy in overall 'very good' condition. The First Number Shews the Page the Second, the Column.' An advertisement is listed on the last page of the index for 'Books Printed for, and Sould by Hannah Sawbridge at the Bible on Ludgate Hill.' 700 pp. Two, unpaginated indexes are included, both entitled, 'The Index of the Chief Matters contained in the Text of these Historians. Text is occasionally ornamented throughout with engraved decoration in black and white and large, decorative initials. Text includes a very thorough table of contents with approximately 20 pages, detailing topics within all five sections listed above. This 17th century work and perspective is divided into five parts: 1) Eusebius his Ecclesiastical History in X Books', 2) Ecclesiastical History of Socrates Scholasticus in VII Books, 3) Ecclesiastical History of Evagrius Scholasticus Epiphaniensis in VI Books, 4)Eusebius Pamphilus's Four Books concerning the Life of the blessed Emperour Constantine, and 5) Emperour Constantine's Oration, which he Entitled to the Convention of the Saints. This work is brimmed to overflowing with historical data and information regarding Josephus to Socrates, to Dionysius, and Constantine, Ignatius, Clemens, Domitian, Diocletian, Maximian, Tatianus, Bardesanes, Theudas, Josefush, Alexandrian, Irenaeus, Clemens Alexandrinus, and many, many, more, just to name a few. Small hole 1/2' hole within pages 5 and 6, slightly compromising the text, yet enough is there to infer its meaning. Another name 'Samuel Hadfields' (sp?) is also written in ink.

Small inscription at the top right corner reads, 'Wm Hudson's Bood, for which Edwards on Religious Reflections was exchanged with W Galland N 99'. Names from previous book owners are written on the front flyleaf from the period. All edges have toned with the darkening reflected throughout at each leave's edge. Pages have beautifully, evenly toned with some, (but very little) foxing throughout. Front flyleaf has been professionally repaired at the bottom corner, as well as the corner of the title page.

At over 300 years old, leaves are in lovely condition with only small chipping to the edges.

Text is written primarily in English in duel columns, with some Greek. Professionally and beautifully rebound in brown linen cloth with gilt lettering on the spine.
